ABOUT THE ARTIST
José Miguel is a blossoming, eclectic, young Chilean tenor. He currently resides in Salt Lake City, UT where he is pursuing his Doctorate in Vocal Performance and holds the tenor position in the Marriott Graduate Vocal Quartet at the University of Utah.
Throughout his career, he has performed lead operatic roles in the works of the great Italian composers: Verdi’s Rigolettoand Puccini’s La bohème. Other appearances include roles in Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas, Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor, Menotti’s Amahl and the Night Visitors, Leavitt’s A Christmas Carol, and Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd. His voice has been heard internationally in Chile, Costa Rica, Trinidad and Tobago, Puerto Rico, Austria, Italy, and Canada.
In October 2021, José Miguel made his official directorial debut with De Falla’s El retablo de Maese Pedro. More recently, he has staged works by Britten, Weill, and Bernstein. As an educator, he advocates for a holistic and personal approach to singing, emphasizing the uniqueness of each voice and acknowledging the challenges that each individual faces in their development. He relishes any opportunity to share his love for opera with his students and audiences alike.
José Miguel is a native of Santa Cruz, Chile and holds both a B.A. in Music from St. Lawrence University and a M.M. in Voice Performance from the University of South Florida. He is also a proud graduate of United World College Costa Rica and a board member of the Chilean UWC National Committee.
